Description

Nineteen reconstruction illustrations and six general illustrations depicting the monument, its component features and people at Maiden Castle Iron Age hillfort, as well as its previous and subsequent associated monuments. The illustrations were created between 1985 and 2005 by various illustrators, and appear to have been commissioned for site interpretation and/or related publications.

Two illustrations created by Judith Dobie in circa 1985 depict skeletal remains excavated from the ‘War Cemetery’ at the hillfort, with two reconstruction illustrations also by Dobie depicting Iron Age people at the site and a further reconstruction showing the Romano-British temple from the site.

Two illustrations by an unknown artist show archaeologists at work during the 1985 - 1986 excavation and examples of two of the types of wheat for which they found evidence at the site. Two reconstruction illustrations created by Miranda Schofield in the early 2000s show roundhouses during occupation of the site in the Iron Age, with a further reconstruction illustration by the same illustrator depicting the clearance of woodland and construction of the Neolithic causewayed enclosure that pre-dated the Iron Age hillfort.

There are six reconstruction illustrations created by Peter Dunn in 2005 giving aerial views of the Iron Age hillfort through various phases of construction, and the Neolithic causewayed enclosure which pre-dated it. Two of these sheets (IC064/011 and IC064/012) show three and four phased drawings of the entrances to the site, and these small detail drawings have previously been scanned individually for inclusion on the English Heritage website. These drawings are included, with archive object numbers IC064/011A - IC064/011D and IC064/012A - IC064/012C. Dunn also created a reconstruction of the Romano-British temple, showing a similar full-colour view to Dobie’s black and white illustration of the temple.

A further two illustrations by Philip Corke and Liam Wales in 2005 give present-day aerial views of the remains of the hillfort, perhaps intended to form part of orientation maps of the site.
