Description

Photograph album labelled 'Housing Private Estates : London Pre-War' containing 77 black and white prints of various private housing schemes developed throughout the 1930s by Laing's Properties Limited, the property investment subsidiary company of John Laing and Son.

Included are images of housing estates built at Golders Green, Enfield, Springfield, Sudbury Hill, Canon Park (Jul 1933 and Feb 1964), Southgate, Woodford, Elstree, Queensbury (Jun 1932, May 1936), Cranford (22 Mar 1935), Edgware (Aug 1936), Sunnyfields at Mill Hill, Shooters Hill and Purley Estate, including views of Buttermere Gardens (circa Jun 1936). As well as general street views there are oblique aerial shots, some of which are annotated and also in some cases photographs of the architectural site plans of the housing estate. In a few of the photographs different Laing show homes can be seen as well as the Laing company estate office. There is also a photograph of the Edgware estate showing workers excavating for a shopping parade on the Watford-By-Pass (Aug 1936).

Throughout the 1930s John Laing and Son were responsible for about one in fifty of the houses put up by private enterprise in the London area. The firm acquired a reputation for quality and they employed their own staff architect, David Adam. The company also often developed shopping and factory precincts next to these estates.
