Description

Photograph album containing 84 black and white prints documenting the construction of the M1 Motorway. Included are details of machinery at work such as the Smith - Rodley No 21 Excavator, Dodger truck and Caterpillar and Vickers Vigor tractors and details of various sections being constructed, including Structure 55 - River Ouse crossing near Newport Pagnell, Structure 25 road underpass bridge near Tingrith and bridges 34, 35, 36, 51 and 52. Also included are views of a helicopter carrying Mr Harold Watkinson (Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation) surveying the first stages of earth moving as part of the inaugural ceremony on 24 March 1958.
