Photograph album labelled 'Power Stations : Nuclear : Balfour Beatty Progress 1' containing 80 black and white prints showing the initial stages of construction of Berkeley Nuclear Power Station. Included are photographs showing excavations and laying of foundations for turbine hall and pumphouse, foreshore, intake works and outfall tunnels, cooling water ducts and views of Balfour Beatty compound, batching plant, labour camp, caravan site and bungalows with interior views of theatre, canteen, bedroom and communal bathroom.
Berkeley Nuclear Power Station was the first commercial nuclear power station to be built in Britain. It was built for the Central Electricity Generating Board by A.E.I. - John Thompson Nuclear Energy Company Limited. John Laing and Son Limited and Balfour Beatty and Company Limited were contracted as civil engineers to work on the project.
