Description

Photograph album, labelled 'No. 8', containing 60 black and white prints showing the construction of the 'new' Bank of England. Between 1925 and 1939 the 'Old Bank' was demolished and a new building designed by Sir Herbert Baker was constructed on the same site in Threadneedle Street, incorporating elements from Sir John Soane's old Bank of England. The album contains views of various elevations during construction; roof and mansards; inner hall of the Threadneedle Street entrance; Garden Court; goods yard; shuttering for the ventilating ducts from ground floor lobby to Experts' Suite; shuttering to domes and barrels along the Governor's Corridor and Experts' lobby; Threadneedle Street portico and bronze doors; electric light and telephone conduits; roof tiling; east pavilion; reinforcement to the Committee Room ceiling; shuttering to ceilings of the court room and ante room; electrical floor box system on the fourth floor; the pilot engine room; and engines at the west end of the boiler room.

Archival History

Laing Construction took over the London firm of Holloways in 1964. It is presumed that the photograph album was acquired at this point.
