Description

Photograph album, labelled 'No. 13', containing 60 black and white prints showing the construction of the 'new' Bank of England. Between 1925 and 1939 the 'Old Bank' was demolished and a new building designed by Sir Herbert Baker was constructed on the same site in Threadneedle Street, incorporating elements from Sir John Soane's old Bank of England. The album contains general views of structural streelwork; detailed views of welded steelwork; the walls at the north east corner of Vault V10; floor of Vault B12; floors of the outer treasury and basement; shuttering to ground floor at Tivoli Corner; stonework to Lothbury Court; shuttering for ground floor Tivoli Corner; shuttering and conduits for water storage No. 3; conduits for instrument room; Tivoli corner from inside; Princes Street vestibule; mezzanine floor Lothbury side; shuttering for barrel ciling to Discount Office; and building up of stonework on various elevations.

Archival History

Laing Construction took over the London firm of Holloways in 1964. It is presumed that the photograph album was acquired at this point.

Album stored in box labelled 90/2000: 3 albums (Holloway) Bank of England refurbishment.
