Description

Photograph album, labelled 'No. 16', containing 61 black and white prints showing the construction of the 'new' Bank of England. Between 1925 and 1939 the 'Old Bank' was demolished and a new building designed by Sir Herbert Baker was constructed on the same site in Threadneedle Street, incorporating elements from Sir John Soane's old Bank of England. The album contains views showing: air intake; engine room; ariel figure on dome; statue of Sir John Stone in Lothbury; dome construction; water coolers on roof; Soane roof; plastering in sub treasury; ventilation units; internal doorways; air conditioning plant; copper conduits to fuseboards; sub-treasury dome and lantern from inside; lanterns over loans office; tiling to clerestory and arches; entrance hall and lift hall; lecture hall; court room; and various elevations.

Archival History

Laing Construction took over the London firm of Holloways in 1964. It is presumed that the photograph album was acquired at this point.

Album stored in box labelled 91/2000: 2 albums (Holloway) Bank of England refurbishment.
