Description

Photograph album, labelled 'No. 17', containing 36 black and white prints showing the construction of the 'new' Bank of England. Between 1925 and 1939 the 'Old Bank' was demolished and a new building designed by Sir Herbert Baker was constructed on the same site in Threadneedle Street, incorporating elements from Sir John Soane's old Bank of England. The album contains views of internal doors; the officials' lunch room; drawing office; bill office; loans office; sub-treasury; electric floor box system; court room; teak screens dividing spaces; committee room; frescos in the lunettes of the ante-hall; engine room; and three views showing damage caused by an air raid on 9th September 1940. The photographs have been removed from 3 pages within the album.

Archival History

Laing Construction took over the London firm of Holloways in 1964. It is presumed that the photograph album was acquired at this point.

Album stored in box labelled 91/2000: 2 albums (Holloway) Bank of England refurbishment.
