Description

A box containing 148 loose, mounted, black and white prints documenting the construction by Laing's of part of the first section of the M1 Motorway. Included are photographs showing the inaugral ceremony on the 24th March 1958 featuring the Rt Hon Harold Watkinson M.P., Minister of Transport; diggers removing top soil at Kilsby, Northants; a series of aerial views of the route taken by Fairey Air Surveys Ltd and John Holden, including the site of Watford Services; the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation inspecting work on the motorway; views from the Election Court Dinner of the Worshipful Company of Carmen at Trinity House on the 27th July 1960, documenting awards made to Laing Construction in recognition of their work building 55 miles of the M1 in 19 months.
