Description

Photograph album containing 61 black and white prints documenting the construction of the M1 motorway, dating from 1958 - 1959. These include: views of Caterpillar tractors at work; a Bedford truck at a batching plant near Chalton Cross; construction of various structures and bridges 1959; completed stretches of motorway; viaducts over the Grand Union Canal, River Ouse and River Nene; construction of the Luton-Dunstable railway bridge; farm access bridge and cattle underpass; the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation inspecting work at the A505 junction; excavating through Tingrith sand quarry; clearing Gayhurst Wood; and earth moving vehicles at the Inaugural Ceremony. Also included are 4 photographs showing hardshoulder reconstruction the 'London to Birmingham motorway' taken on 26th January 1961.
