Description

Photograph album containing 80 black and white prints documenting the construction of the M1 motorway (London to Yorkshire Motorway and London to Birmingham Motorway), dating from 1958 - 1959. These include: views of earth moving vehicles and trucks; aerial views of sections of the motorway and a bridge at Newport Pagnall; construction of the railway bridge over the Marylebone-Rugby main line; the Inaugural Ceremony on 24th March 1958; cutting under the London to Dunstable Railway; bridge construction; piling in progress for a canal bridge; viaduct over the River Nene; Bailey Bridge at Watford Gap; automix plant at Hartigans Pit; tree felling at Diamond Bridge; construction of the flyover junction on the Luton-Dunstable Road and the A508 junction at Collingtree; construction of railway underbridge on the Stratford-on-Avon Midland Junction Railway; a completed cattle underpass and farm access bridge; and bridge abutments under construction at the A43 near Blisworth.
