Description

Folder 19 contains 342 colour slides relating to Second World War airfields and structures at RAF Hawkinge, RAF Tangmere, RAF Debden and RAF Castle Camps. Several of the slides show submarine pens at Bordeaux, Brest, La Pallice, Lorient and Kerneval, and Saint-Nazaire in France. There are also images taken on USS Jeremiah O'Brien in San Francisco and HMCS Sackville in Halifax, Nova Scotia. There are close-ups of instrument panels in Spitfire cockpits, a Hawker Hurricane fighter plane, gravestones, two inn signs, photographic portraits, portraits of RAF officers by Cuthbert Orde drawing in 1940, copies of illustrations, newspapers and posters, Second World War aftefacts including a RAF C-Type flying helmet and burnt flying gloves. A selection of the slides has been catalogued to item level.
