428 sheets made between the sixteenth century and 2005, covering the range of Berwick-upon-Tweed's historic town defences and fortifications including walls, bastions and defensive positions from the Edwardian, Tudor and Hanoverian periods. There are plans, sections, elevations, details, isometric drawings, photogrammetric surveys and sets of rectified photography. There are also topographic surveys of the castle and town made in 1984 and 1989.
A number of the earliest sheets are reproductions of eighteenth century plans made from nineteenth century copies; also photographic copies of sixteenth and eighteenth century maps made in the 1960s and 1970s. There are a large number of sheets based on Ordnance Survey maps showing custodianship, land use and encroachment issues, as well as a group of four oversized Ordnance Survey maps revised and annotated to 1902 showing custodianship and areas of responsibility. A group of thirty-three sheets show historic periods in the development of the town's defences, some related to an article in the 1965 volume of the 'Antiquaries Journal'. A small number of plans relate to excavation work.
Many sheets from the 1960s onward relate to repairs and maintenance issues, including twenty-two annotated sheets containing copy photographs of walls before and after consolidation work, and some topographic survey sheets showing the surviving walls of Berwick Castle. There are sheets relating to electrical and heating services for Ravensdowne Barracks, a proposed roadway through the ramparts at Wallace Green and the provision of public toilets at Castlegate.
