Description
208 sheets dating from the early twentieth century to early 2009, showing the castle and its related buildings under the custodianship of English Heritage and its predecessor organisations. The earliest drawings are Ordnance Survey map sheets from 1901.
Most sheets relate to restoration and repairs, beginning in the 1910s with the east gatehouse and tower. The priest's house, St Leonard's chapel and its adjoining St Anne's chapel receive particular attention. There are drawings made for administrative purposes, including text for signage, plans for reproduction in guidebooks, and illustrations of castle features, such as the armour and coats-of-arms held in the chapel.
Some plans show change of use for buildings: the granary becomes a ticket office, the priest's house becomes accommodation for the site custodian. Other sheets show new features, including a new footbridge, an oak staircase for the priest's house, and a nappy-changing unit for the toilets.
There are sheets relating to electrical and water supply, and, from the 1970s, site access and circulation proposals.
From the 1980s there are photogrammetric, rectified photographic and topographic surveys of aspects of the site and its walls and buildings by Atkins AMC, Plowman, Craven and Associates, Photarc, the Downland Partnership and Architecton. There are two oversized sheets.
