Description

431 sheets of measured drawings, measured surveys, photogrammetric surveys, maritime charts, excavation plans, lists and sketches of Hurst Castle, ranging in date from January 1742 to February 2016. These include a number of sheets relating to the new lower lighthouse at Hurst Castle, dating from the late-nineteenth century. There are also a selection of other sheets from this date such as plans of various parts of the castle, including the magazines, gun casemates, and the keep, and plans and sections of the east and west wings.

There are several sheets dating from 1907 to 1908 relating to the Number ten 'EL' Light Emplacement at Hurst Castle. There are also a number of sheets dating from 1910 relating to the lighthouses and lanterns at the site.

Several sheets from the 1930s refer to the proposed new pier and jetty at Hurst Castle, and there are a number of sheets from this date showing proposed new accommodation at the site.

A series of sheets produced in December 1948 consist of labelled plans of the keep. There are a number of sheets from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s relating to coast protection work at the site, and to the re-asphalting of the roof.

There are twelve sheets of measured drawings relating to the Lower Lighthouse, created by Trinity House in the late twentieth century. Several drawings from 1977 relate to the refreshment room at Hurst Castle, and there are four sheets showing electrical services, lighting and power at the castle, dating from January 1978.

Seven sheets of a hydrographic survey at the site were produced in 1978-1979, and eight sheets consist of a beach survey undertaken in 1983-1984.

There are seven electrical installation drawings from 1984, twenty sheets consisting of plans of the keep dating from April 1985, and five sheets of sections of the keep, from October 1985.

A number of measured drawings relating to the slide and carriage for the 'RML' thirty-eight ton gun date from 1987-1989, while ten sheets from October 1989 relate to the consolidation of the twentieth century defences and the outline cost exercise of the November 1989 proposed works to the west wing.

Four sheets from 1994 show room numbering in the keep, the east wing and the west wing, while eight sheets from 1995 show plans, elevations and sections of the gun emplacement. There are also seven sheets of details showing shield repairs at Hurst Castle. There are also a large number of sketch plans from the mid- and late-1990s.

Recent sheets show rectified photographs of keep windows and the search light emplacement, and survey drawings of the Observation Post.
