Description

The 464 drawings of Lindisfarne Priory date from 1890 to 2011 and include thirteen oversized drawings.

The earliest drawings are a plan of the 1887 - 1889 excavations and second edition Ordnance Survey maps of Holy Island from 1898. There are a number of sheets produced by the Office of Works in the 1910s and 1920s including elevations of the Priory Church, designs for wrought iron fittings, and excavation drawings.

A large proportion of the sheets relate to the design and construction of a new museum for the priory, starting with Department for the Environment drawings from 1972, continuing with architect drawings from Robert Rhind Associates from the 1970s and early 1980s and culminating in the mid-1980s with a large number of sheets by Bain, Swan Architects, Stelmec Engineering Consultants and the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England covering all aspects of the design, construction, fitting-out and landscaping of the new building. Also part of this work is a site survey by Plowman Craven and Associates.

Other sheets include drawings for the Ministry of Works 1949 guidebook, a 1962 survey by the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works, and Department of the Environment and English Heritage sheets mainly from the 1980s and early 1990s showing upgrades to the custodian's cottage. The most recent additions are photogrammetric surveys of parts of the priory and church made by Mason Land Surveys Ltd in 2008 and Photarc Surveys between 2009 and 2011.
