Description

1158 drawings beginning with a few from the mid-eighteenth- to nineteenth-century and ranging to the 1990s, with numerous drawings from the 1930s and 1950s, and a great many from the 1920s and 1960s. This includes contour, photogrammetric and topographical surveys. They depict the stone circle, including excavations and surveys of it and adjustments to it. Included in this is the work of William Hawley from 1919 to 1926 and Thomas Aubrey Bailey from 1958 to 1964. More general drawings depict the features of the area around Stonehenge and land ownership. In addition there are many drawings concerning the development of the Custodians Cottages and hut, public lavatories, and various car parks and visitor facilities such as a tea lounge, ticket office, underpass and visitor centre, etc.

Twenty-six oversized drawings are mostly plans of the site and from the Department of the Environment in March 1977 presentation drawings showing reconstructed phases of the stone circle.

There are also a number of drawings from 1993 and 1994 relating to proposed improvements to site car park, and the A303 road in the Stonehenge area. Another series of nine detailed road improvement plans are included, made by contractors in the early 2000s.
