Description

The site of Thornton Abbey consists of the ruins of the Abbey church and adjoining monastic buildings founded as a Priory in 1139. In addition there is the Abbey gatehouse and wing walls, precinct walls and barbican, dating from the 14th to 16th Centuries, with later repairs. The collection in the historic plans room consists of 388 sheets relating to the site, dating from the early 20th Century to 1992, with the majority from the mid 20th Century. There are a number of plans and elevations of Thornton Abbey Gatehouse dating from the early 20th Century. There are also several site plans of the abbey, some are copies of Ordnance Survey sheets, while others show guardianship areas.

There are several rubbings of numbered grave slabs from within the abbey, dating from March 1949, with an additional sheet showing the location of the grave slabs. The origin of these rubbings is not certain, but they were probably produced by the Ministry of Works.

A large proportion of the records for this site (236 sheets) consists of sketch details, plans and sections of mouldings at Thornton Abbey, the majority of which are taken from the Chapter House. These items were produced c1958, and were probably created by the Ministry of Works.

A number of plans, produced by the Ministry of Works, show the location of building materials and craftsmen used for the 14th Century building at Thornton Abbey; these date from 1958, and were produced for publication purposes. There are also several labelled plans of Thornton Abbey from this period, produced for publication, with keys to indicate the phases of construction of the buildings.

Seven sheets dating from the late 20th Century show sketch elevations, plans and sections of doors and gates in Thornton Abbey Gatehouse. There are also a number of plans and elevations showing proposed designs for new showcases in the Gatehouse.

There are fifteen sheets forming part of a photogrammetric survey of the Gatehouse, north and south precinct walls, and barbican, dating from 1984-1985, and produced by the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies on behalf of English Heritage. Eleven sheets, produced in August 1986, form part of a topographical survey of the Thornton Abbey site, which was carried out by Plowman Craven and Associates. The survey shows spot heights, contours, trees and buildings.

There are also eight oversize drawings in the collection. Four of these show details of mouldings from Thornton Abbey, one is a site plan produced from enlarged Ordnance Survey sheets, and three are plans of the abbey and surrounding buildings, produced by the Ministry of Works for publication.
