Description

The 356 drawings of Upnor Castle date from 1667 to 2014. The earliest drawings are depictions of a 1667 Dutch raid on the River Medway. There are some early plans of the castle from the seventeenth century and two sheets of the 1862 Ordnance Survey of the castle.

In 1963 the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works completed seven plans of the site, and there are seven drawings by the same author for the 1967 site guidebook.

Between 1965 and 1968, the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works created nine plans for a new toilet block. There is a drawing of a display board and five items of text for display by the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works from 1967.

There are four drawings by the Department of the Environment from 1976 and 1977 for the repair of roof trusses, followed by eight drawings from 1982 detailing the repairs undertaken.

There are survey drawings from 1984 by Plowman Craven and Associates, from 1989-90 by Survey International, and sketch plans of the site made by English Heritage probably in 1989.

A number of sheets were produced by Julian Harrap Architects, who made a four-drawing survey of roof trusses in the magazine building in 1989, and between 1989 and 1991 undertook a major survey of the site including: a scheme of four drawings to restore the clock and bell frame to the gatehouse; twenty-one drawings for repairs to roof trusses in the magazine building; fourteen drawings of alterations to the barrack block; and seven drawings of plans for public access and displays.

Between 1991 and 1992 English Heritage undertook a major restoration of the South Tower which was completed by December 1992 and resulted in twenty-five drawings and photogrammetric survey sheets, along with three boards of mounted photographs of the castle prior to restoration. At the same time, several drawings showing electrical and water services, a refurbishment plan for the south tower passage and details of a new weathervane were produced. In April 1992 six drawings of designs for floodlighting the castle and barracks were completed.

Later drawings include six survey plan drawings by Cadtec, fourteen by Maurice Baguley and Partners, and two sheets of rectified photography by the Downland Partnership.
