Description

The collection comprises 181 drawings relating to Warkworth Castle and Hermitage, ranging in date from 1897 to 2012.

Drawings relating to the Castle include Ordnance Survey maps of the site from 1897. There are a number of drawings from the early twentieth Century including plans of the courtyard and keep, and of the stairs at the entrance to the keep. There are several plans of the Castle buildings at various levels, produced in January 1923. Other drawings from the 1920s include plans and elevations of the well in the courtyard, the fireplace in the Crake-Fergus Tower, the entrance to the keep, the stone steps and floor in the Grey Mare's Tail Tower, and the drawbridge over the moat.

There are a number of drawings from the 1930s relating to access to the Castle, including the cattle grid and fencing on the approach road, and stairs and platform access to the keep. There are also plans of the keep, courtyard, and surrounding buildings from the 1930s, several of which were produced for publication, and include a key to indicate phases of construction.

Drawings produced in the 1960s include proposals for the new custodian's office and sales hut at the Castle. There are also a number of drawings from 1984 showing visitor circulation around the Castle.

There are sixteen sheets produced as part of a topographic survey of the Castle. The survey was carried out in April 1985 by Plowman Craven and Associates, on behalf of Central Survey DCES.

Eleven sheets from 2000 show plans, elevations and sections of the proposed new ticket office and shop at the Castle, and were produced by the Department of the Environment. There is also a survey plan of the gatehouse from 2012.

Drawings relating to the Hermitage include an Ordnance Survey map of 1897 covering the area, plans of the site, ground and first floors of the Hermitage from the early twentieth Century, and drawings from April 1925 showing lead glazing in the windows of the Chapel.

There are two publication drawings dating from May 1936, showing the plan of the Hermitage, with a key to indicate phases of construction. Several drawings from 1984 relate to the proposed custodian's hut and the proposed new grille for the Hermitage. One sheet from April 1985 was produced as part of a larger survey of the Castle site, and consists of a topographic survey of the Hermitage.
