Description

Three black and white negatives taken for the Ministry of Works showing construction of Great Arthur House tower block on the Golden Lane Estate in the City of London. Much of the City had been flattened during the Second World. The estate was planned by the City of London Corporation to provide accommodation for employees who had to live near their place of work. In reality the estate became popular with professionals such as doctors, journalists and married students. Great Arthur House was built higher than originally intended, partly in order to achieve the agreed population density for the scheme. The Ministry of Work was the Government department tasked by the 'Temporary Housing Act 1944/45' with alleviating the acute housing shortages in the immediate postwar years.

All three negatives were catalogued in 2022.
