Church of St James the Great, Lower Clapton Road, Hackney E5 - Hackney
E C Hakewell built the church with transepts and a slim tower (but no aisles) in 1840. It was extended with a chancel by W D Caroe in 1902. In 1978 the nave was divided from the church and converted for the Huddleston Centre, now closed. The church is built of London stock bricks with Bath stone dressings under a slated roof, while the Caroe work is of soft red brick under a tiled roof. The crossing and nave are roofed in remarkably delicate but long-span trusses which are failing at some joints and bearing points, as confirmed by engineers. The Church is actively seeking funds for repairs.
