Reasons for Designation
Despite reduction in the heights of some banks and lynchets from cultivation, the part of the field system 250m north of Eggardon Hill Farm survives well and will contain archaeological and environmental evidence relating to its construction, development, the social organisation of the builders and land allocation, agricultural practices and overall landscape context.
Details
The monument includes part of a later Prehistoric or Romano-British field system, situated along the steep valley side of a tributary to the River Frome to the east of Eggardon Hill. The part of the field system survives as a complex and extensive series of field banks and strip lynchets of up to 3m high with some identifiable square-shaped individual fields. At least two different areas of fields are represented in total covering an area of some 12ha. Further archaeological remains survive in the vicinity and are scheduled separately.
