Details
DILTON MARSH OLD DILTON ST 84 NE (west side) 8/118 Church of St Mary 11.9.68 I Anglican parish church, now redundant. C14, C15 and C17 with C18 interior. Rubble stone, stone slate roof with coped verges. Nave, chancel, north chapel and vestry, north aisle, south porch, west spire. C14 gabled porch has moulded pointed doorway with hoodmould and cusped spandrels, C17 tablet with scrolled carving on east wall. Nave has 2-light Tudor-arched window to left and 2-light square-headed window and 3-light square-headed window with cusped lights to right. Chancel has moulded pointed priest's door to south side with C14 two-light square-headed window with ogee-headed lights and hoodmould to left and 3-light square-headed to right, east end has 3-light Tudor-arched window with pointed lights and hoodmould, diagonal buttresses. C17 north vestry and gallery has hollow-chamfered east doorway to gallery with single-light hollow- chamfered window over, north side has 3-light mullioned windows with segmental cusped lights, to ground floor and gallery. North aisle has diagonal buttresses, three 3-light square-headed windows with Tudor-arched cusped lights, blocked doorway with scalloped head and scrolled hoodmould. West end of nave has 2-light square- headed window with arched lights either side of central buttress carried up to octagonal stone bell turret with small square louvres and short ashlar spire. Interior: Porch has stone benches, 2-bay plastered pointed ceiling with ribs, chamfered inner doorway. Nave has shallow barrel vaulted plastered ceiling, flat plastered chancel ceiling, no chancel arch. C15 four-bay north arcade with moulded pointed arches with panelled soffits, chamfered square piers, 8-bay tie- beam roof, formerly plastered. C17 vestry off north side of chancel with C19 fireplace and fitted cupboards, family gallery over with external access up stairs, panelled gallery front, 3-bay tie-beam roof. Fine C18 fittings include west gallery with panelled front, octagonal pulpit with tester, up steps, in centre of south side, box pews of different dates incorporating late Medieval pews, particularly to west end where several unaltered Medieval pews survive. Recut C15 octagonal stone font at west end. Royal Arms of George III over chancel. C18 communion rail with stick balusters and ramped handrail. Lords Prayer painted on north wall of aisle, some fragments of wall painting on south wall. Wall tablet in chancel with scrolled decoration to Edward Line died 1744.
