CORSHAM PRIORY STREET ST 87 70 (north side) 5/344 No. 2 (Ivy House) (formerly listed as Ivy House 20.12.60 with stables) GV II*

House, early C18, extended, ashlar-fronted with stone-tiled hipped roofs and ashlar stacks. Original square plan range to left with formal east front, and 2 additional parallel ranges added to north, one range forming left side of formal west front, both with hipped gables to east. Original range has fine 3-window Baroque front with quoin pilasters, moulded plinth, moulded coved cornice and parapet with sunk panels and ramped ends. Two-storey centrepiece breaking through cornice into parapet of lower 12-pane sash in fluted Roman Doric pilaster surround with segmental pediment and upper 12-pane segmental-headed sash in architrave with keystone set in fluted Ionic pilaster surround with ornate pediment. Side windows segmental-headed sashes in architraves with keystones, moulded sills and apron panels. Aprons under upper windows have pendants, centre pendant being keystone of lower window. To right are hipped ends of 2 parallel ranges, the first with hipped 9-pane dormer, 2 plain upper sashes, moulded band and one lower segmental- headed sash in architrave. Door to left to passage between ranges leading to elliptical-arched door with keystone and hood on brackets, hood built into side walls each side. Outer range may be early C20 rubble stone with ashlar quoins, 2-storey, 2-window east end sashes, segmental-headed to ground floor. North side stack. South side of original range, to Priory Street has quoin pilasters and cornice as on east front, 2 large chimney gables and 2-storey elevation largely of blank segmental-arched surrounds in 1-3-1 arrangement, centre being arched window to first floor and arched door below closely flanked by blank windows and plain pilasters. Ground floor centre is recessed in broad elliptical arch with moulded course stepped over but repeated within over keystones. Tall 8-panel door. North front has centre and wings composition with rendered centre and hipped ashlar wings. Very large 40-pane stair light to centre, quoin pilasters and 2-window range of 12- pane sashes to wings, ground floor right replaced by large C19 canted ashlar bay. Basement centre has ovolo-moulded 2-light mullion window. North parallel range has lower west end section projecting, south side door with hood on brackets and west end cyma-moulded mullion windows, mostly C20. Interior: fine stair hall with bead-moulded fireplace. Stair with lozenge-patterned tread ends and carved brackets under, alternating twisted and fluted balusters and moulded rail. Panelled dado with fluted pilasters.
