STUDLEY HARDWICK LANE SP06SE (East side) 4/215 Left entrance lodge, gates, gatepiers and attached wall at Studley Castle

Shown on 0.S. map as The Lodge, Entrance lodge, gates, gatepier and attached wall. c.1834. Probably by Samuel Beazley for Sir Francis Goodricke. Sandstone ashiar, with moulded stone plinth and cornices. Roof not visible behind parapet; no stack visible. Octagonal. Gothic Revival style. One storey. Entrance in right return side has projecting porch. 4-centred chamfered doorway with double-leaf doors and overlight, left and right return sides have lancets in moulded arches. Cornice and crenellated parapet. Front has C20 casements in moulded arches to 3 sides. Polygonal angle buttresses with blind lancets and caps. String course from top of buttresses. Machicolated crenellated parapet. Rear similar. Interior not inspected. Cast iron Gothic gates with quatreloils, tracery, shields and crenellated tops. Ashlar gatepier between pedestrian and main gates has moulded plinth and cornice, and blind lancets. Ashlar wall attached to lodge on left has short crenellated right angle section. Remainder of wall attached at an angle is lower, of polygonal form, with molded plinth and coping and polygonal buttresses, and ending in a taller octagonal pier with moulded cap, C20 single storey addition behind wall.
