ASTON CANTLOW SHELFIELD SP16SW 5/52 Shelfield Park Farmhouse

GV II

Farmhouse. C17, refaced or partly rebuilt and possibly extended C18/C19; projecting centre, rear additions and alterations mid C19. Timber framed with lath and plaster and brick infill; right part has high plinth and part of rear wing of regular coursed limestone. Entirely faced in red Flemish Bond brick, with additions of different bricks. Brick dentil cornice. Tile roof; brick end stacks. Complex L-plan, with wing to rear. 2 storeys and attic; 3-window range. Projecting gabled centre has part-glazed 6-panelled door in gabled brick open porch. Narrow flanking windows. C19 casements, mostly 3-light, on upper floors with glazing bars. To left canted bay window. First floor windows have cambered brick arches to left and centre; painted wood lintel to right. First floor on right faced with thinner, possibly C17 bricks. Central and left return side gables of different brick have brick corbelling and patterning. 2-light segmental-headed casement in central gable. Right return side has gable with exposed framing and casement. 2-storey wing with ground floor casement. To rear: Wing on left has bricked-up doorway, with casement inserted, in right return side. C19 gabled range in re-entrant angle. Interior: Entrance hall with C19 quarter turn staircase. Some exposed framing and broad-chamfered ceiling beams in rooms to right on both floors. Attics have C17 three-plank doors. Forms part of a group with barn (q.v.) and shelter shed (q.v.).
