GV II

Dry dock. 1820. For Hillhouse, Sons and Co. Pennant rubble and squared ashlar. A round-ended dock with 4 steps along the sides, each with 2 flights of steps down, with caisson lock gates. HISTORICAL NOTE: formerly the New Dockyard, renamed 1848 after the company became Charles Hill and Sons. Albion Dock was the largest in the port, in which some of Bristol's largest ships were built. Part of a group with the Great Western Dry Dock (qv), and one of the last structures associated with the City's shipbuilding past. (Lord J and Southam J: The Floating Harbour: Bristol: 1983-: 82).
