Shown on O.S. map as Head Post Office. Former post office, later part of the University of Wolverhampton (Polytechnic at date of listing). 1895. Dark red brick with yellow terracotta dressings and slate roof. Northern Renaissance style. Symmetrical composition of 2 storeys and 13 bays; 2nd to 4th bays project under Dutch gable, as do 10th to 12th bays; central entrance bay breaks forward. Terracotta plinth, sill courses and flush bands, cornice to ground floor and top entablature with balustraded parapet. Projecting bays have round-headed windows with panelled pilasters and archivolts with keys and flanking windows with architraves, top festooned panels and segmental pediments, similar architraved window to 13th bay; central bays have similar round-headed windows paired with enriched spandrels to ground floor; 1st floor cross-mullioned 2-light windows with pilasters, friezes and cornices, those to central and projecting bays framed by Ionic pilastrades with plinths and festooned friezes. Paired round-headed attic lights to gables, with fluted colonnetes and flanking pilasters, panelled friezes, cartouches to pediments; 1st bay has flat-topped dormer. Central entrance has porch with Corinthian half-columns, enriched frieze and cornice, parapet with enriched date panel under consoled pediment with cartouche, flanking lions hold Royal arms. Entrance to 1st bay has architrave, overlight and consoled triangular pediment. Parapet has central panel with Royal arms and shell pediment; octagonal cupola with round-arched openings; banded stacks. Similar detached right return to Princess St; plain rear elevation with open-fronted bays. INTERIOR: altered; main hall has Ionic pilasters.
