Details
WALLSEND A.187 (north of) NZ 36 NW 7/143 Willington Viaduct G.V. II Railway viaduct. 1837-9 by John and Benjamin Green for Newcastle and North Shields Railway Company. Sandstone ashlar with iron arches and superstructure (added in 1869 when the original laminated wood construction was removed). 1,048 feet long; 82 feet high. 7 iron girder arches of spans varying from 115 to 128 feet. T-section iron lattices between arches and railway bed girders, which are also supported by masonry. Sloped copings to buttressed piers and abutments. Historical note: one of the earliest bridges constructed in Britain using the Wiebeking system of laminated timber; the present iron work resembles the wood original.
