TQ 3426 LINDFIELD HIGH STREET (east side) 6/191 No 56 The Toll House 10.9.51 (formerly listed as the Gate House) GV II House and shop, at one time a toll house. Built gable end to road, the rear 2 bays are C16, originally jettied, the front bay is early C17 refronted in C19. Timber- framed the rear part close studded with plaster infill to 1st floor painted brick to ground floor, the front part square panels with brick nogging, the gable weather- boarded. Front of roof Horsham stone slabs, rear tiled. 2 storeys. Gable front has 1st floor triple C19 casement, ground floor tripartite sash of 28 panes and later door. North elevation has mainly casement windows. Massive stepped external chimney stack to east with sandstone base and brown brick above.
