TQ 32 NW HAYWARDS HEATH BALCOME ROAD 1/100 No 1 (The Mill House) 7.7.81 GV II House, formerly a miller's house. The rear range is a mid to late C15 4 bay timber framed house, the front range is C18 altered c1920. REAR RANGE: ground floor underbuilt in brick, 1st floor has exposed square framing with jowled posts and wattle and daub infilling. Tiled roof, casement windows C20 brick and tiled extension added to rear. FRONT RANGE: a taller range of 2 storeys and attics, grand floor of brick, 1st floor tile hung Mansard roof, tiled at the back and Horsham stone slabs to garden elevation. Tall axial chimney stacks and 2 modern hipped dormers. Dogtooth cornice. 3 modern casements, including modern ground floor bay. Doorcase now in modern left hand bay. Interior not seen at time of survey but said to include blocked mullioned window between front and rear range. The home of Timothy Burrell, the Cuckfield diarist.
