Details

SU 81 NW ELSTED CHICHESTER ROAD 16/21 Telegraph House II L-shaped building. Stuccoed. Eaves bracket cornice. Slate roof. Casement windows. Tower of four storeys and one window in the south east angle. Round window on second floor. Pyramidal slate roof with ball cap. The south front has a round headed doorway with pilasters and projecting cornice. The west end of this front projects and consists of only one storey and attic with four windows and two dormers. The rest of the front has two storeys and attic, four windows and two dormers. Four windows facing east. There was a semaphore station on this site from the earliest period of such communications. The present house was built in connection with this in the Mid C19. From 1927-37 it was the home of the famous Beacon Hill School run by Bertrand Russell, later Lord Russell, and Dora Black. It is listed for historical reasons.
