Details
WITHYHAM GROOMBRIGDGE 1. 5208 Leyswood (formerly listed as Leywood) TQ 53 NW 6/167 18.4.73 II 2. Built in 1868-9. Architect Norman Shaw. Remains of an important house, of which part has been demolished. What survives comprises the gate house and two sides of a court-yard. Gothic style. Two storeys. Ground floor red brick with stone dressings, above tile-hung. Tiled roof. Castellated parapet and gable with metal finials. The gate tower has a Gothic arch with two cross windows above and a stair turret. Kitchen court with crenellated wall to left. Three gabled dormers. Billiard room of one storey to right with battlements over. The interior of the court yard has mullioned and transomed windows. The outer wall of the house forms a low retaining wall at the corner of which is a bay window with hipped roof and glided ceiling inside.
