In the entry for:-

TQ 63 SW WADHURST SPARROWS GREEN

15/410 Forge House
(formerly nos 1 and 2
Forge House)

II

The description shall be amended to read:-

House, formerly a pair of cottages. Probably late C17 or early C18 remodelling of an
earlier house, extended and converted in to a row of 3 cottages and a forge in C19.
Timber-framed, brick faced on front with tile-hanging above, tile-hung left hand gable
end, but timber-framing exposed at rear with rendered panels. Brick outshut. Plain
tile roof with gabled ends. Brick gable end stacks. Plan: The existing house has a
2-room plan each room heated from gable end stacks, a doorway to right of centre
directly into the right hand room, a straight staircase on the left side of the central
partition and an outshut behind the left hand room with doorway. There is a doorway in
the left hand end into a rear axial passage which was taken out of the left hand room.
3 wall posts, probably of the earlier, pre late Cl7 or early C18 structure have recently
been discovered in the rear wall. They rise to about 1 metre above first floor level
and have been extended apparently when the house was raised to a full 2 storeys in
circa late Cl7 or early C18. The timber frame structure also incorporates reused
timber presumably from this earlier house. The outshut at the back is a circa C19
addition, probably added when the house was converted into a pair of cottages. The
adjoining range to the right (not included in the listing) was a third cottage and forge
which were probably also added in C19. Later in the C19 or early C20 a wing was built -
onto the front of the right hand cottage. Recently the 2 left-hand cottages have
reverted back into one house, 'The Forge' and the right hand cottage with its front wing
and former forge is now a separate property. Exterior: 2 storeys and attic. Asym-
metrical 4-window range. C19 2 and 3-light iron frame casements with small panes.
Small later facsimile 1-light casement on first floor. Doorway to right of centre has
C20 plank door. At the rear a brick outshut on right and exposed timber-framing on left
with rendered panels. Interior: The right hand room has a chamfered axial beam with
cyma stops unchamfered joists and a large brick fireplace with a large timber lintel its
chamfer carved on it later. The left hand room has C20 chamfered ceiling beam. The
first-floor chambers have chamfered axial beams, the right hand with hollow step stops,
the left hand unstopped. Roof: Circa late Cl7 or early C18 common rafter roof incorpora-
ting earlier timbers including screen headbeams used as purlins and a wall plate used as
a principal.
