23.11.73 Ashtead Lodge, with attached screen walls and garden wall

House, now 5 flats, with attached screen walls and garden wall, Probably 1765 (date on pump in cellar), enlarged in early C20, and altered. Colour-washed red brick in Flemish bond, red tiled roof. Rectangular double-depth plan, with additions at both ends. Two storeys and 7 bays over a service basement, plus attic; the symmetrical facade has a 3-course band and 3-bay pedimented centre breaking forwards slightly, a central doorway (up 3 steps) protected by a glazed wooden porch with fielded panels and low pediment; horned sashed windows without glazing bars, all with gauged brick heads and furnished with decorated wooden blind-hoods; a bracketed cornice; unusual rusticated masonry in the pediment; and a hipped roof with 2 dormers above the pediment, a large chimney stack on the front slope to the right of the centre, and side-wall chimneys at the left end. Attached to the front corner of each end is a quadrantal screen wall, that to the left linked to a garden wall which returns along the north side of the garden, and that to the right partly demolished to make a gateway. (single-storey wing added at left end and 2-storey wing at right-hand end are not of special interest.) Rear: 2 storeys and 7 bays over a high basement, with central porch up 9 steps protected by curved wrought-iron railings, windows sashed without glazing bars, and 3 dormers in the roof. Interior: fine C18 open- well staircase with carved foliated brackets, 3 fluted balusters per tread, fielded panel dado, and triglyph and wreath decoration to the landing (but now partitioned from the front entrance hall); ground-floor front room with full fielded panelling now altered and sub-partitioned, and some panelling relocated; at 1st floor, some C18 panelling including built-in cupboards, 2 C18 fireplaces with keystones (one fluted) and one Adam-style fireplace; full service cellar including remains of oven, wash boiler, and cast-iron pump with raised lettering on the head:- F B 1765 flanked by human figures ("FB" = Francis Beckford).
