Old Barn at Home Farm
GV II*
Barn. Constructed between 1484-1491, using some timbers felled as early as 1312. Timber framed with weatherboard cladding with some later openings and plain tiled roof. Three remaining bays of a possible six bay structure which was not a threshing barn. Two bays were open with the central one originally floored and closed off on both sides with evidence of holes for widely spaced staves in underside of two adjacent tie beams. Wall frame has jowled tops to main posts, midrail and curved tension braces, three missing. Evidence of wattlework to both upper and lower panels. One end missing. Roof has two crownposts of square section with curved head braces and collar beam. Six bays suggested because the collar purlin has a single scarf over the crownpost next to the missing bay but the scarfs in the wall plates occur after two bays. Both facts point to six bays. This barn was constructed at the same time that the lower end of the aisled hall at Home Farmhouse was altered.
