GV II
Garden Temple. C18. Stone with stone paving and earth covering over roof. Four giant Doric columns under honeycomb support triglyph frieze and entablature with temple recess behind. Tunnel vault roof. Arched niches with rusticated decoration within, the centre one containing classical female (Venus) statue and fountain basin, fed by conduit along one garden terrace. The temple is reputed to have been built initially by George Evelyn in 1649, as part of his Italian Gardens at Wotton now included on the "Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England, Part 40 Surrey", at Grade II*.
