4/90 Garden Walls to 14.6.67 North of Chilworth Manor

GV II

Garden walls. Early C18 enclosing site of C17 flower garden with terraces set into hillside. Sandstone rubble with flint galleting, coped and dressed with red brick. Built on a sloping site the walls increase in height towards the south, circa 10' high to north, 15' to south side. Buttressed every 15' on west side with corner pier/turret to south west angle under stone corbelled capital and brick stringcourses. Connected to main house by short wall with arched entrance. In the centre of the north and west sides are rusticated brick entrance piers with brick dentils to moulded tops. Space between on north side filled with plinth wall carrying railings above. Terrace across north end of garden. The walls and garden terraces are attributed to Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough.
