COBHAM
CHILBROOK ROAD
Chilbrook Farmhouse

II
House, formerly farmhouse. Early to mid C17 origin extensively rebuilt in early C18 and now appearing predominantly of the later period, refenestrated in C20. Red brick in Flemish bond with black brick headers. Old tiled roof with end brick chimneystacks. Two storeys and attics, three windows. Two gabled dormers with C19 casements on pintle hinges and late C19 brick and wooden weatherporch with half-hipped tiled roof. Plat band and plinth. Right hand side has lean-to early C19 addition. C20 one storey extension to left.

Ground floor right side room has exposed chamfered axial beam with lambs tongue stops and floor joists. Early C18 staircase changed from well to straight flight except for attic storey which remains in situ. First floor has three plank door and some two-panelled doors and early C19 firegrate. Some early C17 floorboards to first and attic storeys, though attic roof is C18 with through purlins. Some C17 panelling to attic. So-called "priest's hole" at side of first floor brick chimney stack approached from floorboards at attic level is, judging by C18 brickwork, more likely to be C18 home improvement.
