Details
LETHERINGHAM THE STREET TM 25 NE (South side) 5/89 Barn c.15 metres north 16/3/66 east of Letheringham Old Hall (formerly listed as Old Hall Barn) G.V. II
Barn, C16 with later additions. Timber framed with clapboarding and corrugated metal covering and a pantile roof. Ten bays. Road front: gabled transepts projecting at right and left with double doors. Rear: farmbuildings adjoin masking the walling. Interior: jowled wall posts (some replacements) cambered tie beams, queen posts, collars, one pair of purlins and ridge beam with wind bracing. Arched braces connect the wall posts to the tie beams. At the west end the queen posts have arched braces connecting them to the collars and this end appears to be of an earlier build than the eastern end. The walling is middle railed and at the east end is an inserted granary floor. The upper walling at the west end has a series of 4-light windows to each bay, now mostly blocked. Transepts of a later date than the main body, there was formerly a large central double doorway to the middle of the south face, now filled with C18 close studding. The attached farm buildings are not included as part of this item.
