OTLEY HELMINGHAM ROAD TM 25 NW (East side) 4/109 16/3/66 Otley House - II

House. C17 or C18 enlarged in the 1920's. Timber framed core with rendered brick walling and a plain tiled roof. Two storeys. Entrance front: 6 bays symmetrically disposed. The ground floor projects and has a brick plinth and was extended in this way in the 1920's having previously been flush with the first floor. At the centre of the ground floor is a classical door surround with fluted pilasters at either side and a classical entablature with a convex frieze. Door of 6 raised and fielded panels. To either side of this are 3 sash windows all of 3x4 panes with exposed sash boxes and between each pair of windows are set two rectangular panels with bolection-moulded surrounds. Cornice to the top of the ground floor walling. The recessed first floor also has 6 bays similarly arranged with similar panels between. Hipped roof above this which has to its ridge at right and left of centre C19 square chimney stacks with cogged bands to their tops. The right hand side of the house has, at left a projecting bay which has French windows of 4 lights at ground floor level and a tripartite first floor window with central sash of 4x4 panes and lateral lights of 2x4 panes. Recessed at right of this is a rear wing with a tripartite ground floor window with a central window of 3x4 panes and lateral lights of 2x4 panes. Bolection-moulded panels to either side of this window and below the 2 first floor windows, each of 3x4 panes. To right again is a further outshut addition with a cambered-headed 2-light window and cambered-headed sash window to the first floor of 2x4 panes. Left hand side: projecting flank of the front range at right with a ground floor 4-light French window and tripartite first floor window, similar to those seen on the right hand side with similar panels. Recessed at left of this is a colourwashed brick wing which has a 5-light ground floor window with horned sashes and picture window to the first floor at either side of which are horned sashes. Rear: projecting gabled wing at left, with random fenestration largely masked by later additions.

Interior: early C18 staircase of 2 flights with crisply carved spiral-on- vase balusters with moulded, ramped handrail and similarly ramped dado panelling with fluted pilaster-newels. Moulded tread-ends and bowed balcony to the landing. Pine panelling and cornices to several first floor rooms.
