2/15 Castle Farmhouse

GV II

Former farmhouse. Late C16 with late medieval core. 1½ storeys; 3-cell form.
Timber-framed and rendered with clay pantiles. A large C20 porch on the front
with a shallow single-pitch roof running into the main roof. An internal
chimney-stack with a plain red brick shaft. 3 2-light casement windows with a
single bar to lights; one upper casement, and one gabled dormer. C20 plank
door. Timbers exposed inside. Both ends of the house have rough, heavy,
plain joists of medieval type to the ground floor rooms, but the 2-bay central
room has been substantially remodelled. The chamfered main beam of the
ceiling has been inserted into posts with empty motices for long arched
braces, and the chimney-stack intrudes into one of the 2 bays so that the main
beam is not in the middle of the room. On the upper rear wall the remains of
a long 4-light hall window with diamond mullions in situ. These 2 central
bays have a good lace C16 replacement roof with clasped purlins and
windbraces; the remaining parts of the roof have considerable replacement of
components, and some reused smoke-blackened rafters. A small section of a
painted frieze with arabesques in red ochre remains on the wall of the central
room.
