Ceremonial gateway, giving access from the south lawn of Orwell Park, over the
ha-ha, to the lower lawn beyond. Circa 1873. The gateway stands on a grassed
bank above the general level of the lawn, from which it is approached by a
flight of steps on either flank. Another flight of steps leads down directly
from the gateway to span the ha-ha. Dressed limestone. The pair of gatepiers
have panelled faces, moulded cornices and surmounting gadrooned urns with
carved swags. A lintel of scrolled wrought ironwork spans the piers; the pair
of wrought iron gates below have gone. Each flight of steps has solid
balustrading, with square sunk-panelled piers at top and bottom. At the upper
level on either side of the gatepiers is a short length of open balustrading
with turned balusters.
