TM 37 NW CHATFIELD BELL GREEN
2/42 The Old Thatched Cottage - - II
House. In 2 main phases: c.1500 to north of stack, late C17 to south; restored and extended to rear (east) in mid C20. Timber framed and plastered, with some colourwashed brick casing; thatched roof. One and a half storeys. 3 cell form. Various casement windows: to the front there are 2 4-light C19 windows and a reconstructed early mullioned window, to the rear is a 5-light mullioned window of c,1500; mid C20 entrance doors; one gabled dormer to rear. Internal stack. Interior with exposed framing and C16-C17 newel stairs: the older part was floored over in late C16 and at a later date 2 cruck-like members were added at first floor level to raise the ceiling; the roof structure over the earlier end is smoke-blackened.
