Hill Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse. C16 or early C17 with later additions and alterations. Timber
framed with colourwashed render and a plain tile C20 roof, probably
originally thatched. Two storeys with attic. H-shaped roof plan having a
ground floor hall with screens passage. Drive front: two gabled wings
flush with the axial range. The right hand gable wing which appears to be
the earliest part of the building has a C19 or C20 casement window to the
ground floor at left of 3 lights and at first floor level a mullioned
window of 5 lights with moulded mullions and C20 glazing. To left of this
in the axial range is, to the right of centre, a C19 door with classical
surround of 6 panels, the lower 4 being raised and fielded and the upper
two glazed with a moulded surround and pedimental top. To either side of
this are 2-light C19 casements. To the attic at left of centre is a 2-
light C20 hipped dormer window. The left hand wing has 2-light C19
casement windows to the ground and first floors and a further 2-light
casement to the slightly jettied gable. The left hand side has, at ground
floor level, a C20 three-light mullioned window, and a 2-light casement to
the first floor of C19 date. The left hand side has a lean-to with
catslide roof connecting with the lower right-hand wing of C19 date with a
door at left in a lean-to porch. Rear: projecting wings at either side.
The left hand wing has, at ground floor level a central strip window
divided into three parts by king mullions and having 6 central lights with
7 at either side. The right hand window retains its ovolo-moulded mullions
at left and centre. To the first floor is a window of 5 lights, one of the
mullions being a C20 replacement. To right of this the recessed portion
has at far left a C20 chimney-stack with offsets and to right of these one
three-light casement window at left and at right of this a sash window of 3
x 3 panes replacing a doorway and to right again a 2-light C19 casement
window. To the first floor at right of centre is a mullioned window with 2
surviving mullions of diamond shape and at left a 2-light dormer window
with a flat roof of C19 date. In the re-entrant angle with the right hand
wing is a 2-storey lean-to of brick with single-light windows at ground and
first floor levels. The right hand gable end has a C20 glazed doorway at
ground floor level and to the first floor at left a 3-light window.

Interior: Close studding showing throughout the building to both floors.
Massive ceiling beams with run-out endstops to the hall which has a wooden
screen with moulded rails. C20 wooden staircase brought from the Britannia
Building Society, Ipswich, to the screens passage which was slightly
widened to accommodate it. Jowled wall posts to the hall, now cut back and
a brick chimney stack with chamfered and end-stopped bressumer. Further
chamfered ceiling beams and joists to the southern ground floor room.
Chamfered bressumer with stepped run-out stops to the hearth. Further
jowled wall posts to the first floor.
