3/41 Moat Farmhouse
GV II
House, formerly farmhouse. C16 with C17 and C18 additions. Timber framed,
rendered and colourwashed, with brick and wattle and daub infill. Plain
tile roof. Two storeys with attic. L-shaped plan. Early rear wing of mid
C16 date with later C16 or early C17 addition now forming the range which
fronts the road. Road front: 3 bays with C19 fenestration. Porch to
centre of C19 date with a plank door (brought from elsewhere) of C18 date.
casement window and a 3-light window to the first floor. The left hand
flank of this wing has 4-light C16 windows with diamond-section mullions at
right of the ground and first floors and at left C20 copies of these,
having five lights and glazing panels set in front of these mullions. To
left of this wing is an outshut at right and a gabled portion at left with
a stable door at right of centre a 2-light window to right of this and a 3-
light casement at left, all of C20 date, at first floor level is a 3-light
casement also of C20 date.
Interior: The C16 portion has close studding to the walls, one chamfered
ceiling beam at ground floor level and rafters and several planted beams,
brought from elsewhere. To another ground floor room in the newer portion
of the house is a massive ceiling beam with triple roll moulding
underneath, hollow chamfers at the sides and further roll mouldings to the
corners with brattishing above. Similarly modelled fire bressumer to one
further ground floor room (lowered in the wall this century). Jowled wall
posts to the first floor rooms supporting chamfered ceiling beams with
stepped stops and run out. Close studding with angle braces to the walls.
Winder staircase to the attic which shows wind bracing.
