Details

BREDFIELD (Off) WOOBRIDGE ROAD TM 25 SE 3/52 Bredfield House 16/3/66 (formerly listed as Fitzgerald Cottage) and walls of the walled gardens. GV II House, originally garden house and walls of 2 walled gardens. Mid C18 with C20 additions. Red Flemish bond brick with some black headers and a plain tile roof. Single storey house with attics, and two storeys (originally single storey) connected to two rectangular walled gardens. South front of the house: C18 portion at right, slightly projecting with black headers, three bays with cambered heads and with C19 horned sash windows of 3 x 4 panes. The brickwork between the left hand 2 windows appears to have been replaced. Band of three bricks depth above this and a cornice with projecting headers below the eaves. Recessed C20 portion at left of 2 bays with similar cambered-headed sash windows of 3 x 4 panes. To the attic at right are flat-roofed dormer windows, each of 2 lights, and at left is another similar window. The right hand flank is the entrance front and has a projecting wing at left which is the side of the C18 building and has walling with fixed headers and the projecting band of 3 bricks depth. C20 chimney breast to its centre with offsets and single flue. Recessed and at right is the C20 portion which has a doorway at left, the door having 6 recessed panels and a debased classical porch in front. Two-light casement to right of this with a cambered head and a 2-light and a 3-light casement window to the first floor.

Interior: The former garden room, now the drawing room has painted panelling which has raised and fielded panels above and below the chair rail. Dentilled cornice above this. The western wall has a tripartite arrangement divided by fluted pilasters which have moulded bases and caps and projecting portions of cornice above them. The chimney piece has a trellis pattern in relief to the frieze, hollow dentils to the cornice, and brackets to either side, and may be of late-c18 date. Raised and fielded panel to the overmantel. To the left of this is an arched niche with shell motif and flutings to the arched head, pilaster strips to either side and projecting springing pieces and keystone. The bay at right probably contained a similar arrangement but has now been adapted to form a door surround. Joined to the south front and extending northwards are two walled gardens with walls of c.10 feet in height with basket-arched openings to the southern and middle walls and a lean-to glasshouse to the centre of the south face of the north wall. Adjoining the eastern wall to its eastern side is a single storey house adapted from farm buildings in the C20 which is not included as part of this item.
