4/12 The Old Rectory - - II
Former rectory, now in institutional use. Circa 1840 with C18 core to rear. White brick, slated roof. 2 storeys and attics. Symmetrical facade: 5 windows, with full-height 2-light curved bays each side of the entrance bay, which is slightly inset; sash windows with glazing bars in flush frames, flat brick arches; entrance porch with broad architrave, pilasters clasping the angles, entablature and flat roof; half-glazed door. At attic level is a range of C20 metal frame casement windows with plastered surrounds. The gable ends have brick pilasters, the overhanging eaves returned to form a broken pediment. Good mid C18 staircase (probably re-used from the earlier house) with 2 twisted balusters per tread, heavy moulded handrail and carved ends to the treads; panelled entrance hall. Attached to the rear is a range of former cottages, not of special interest. Sandon, Suffolk Houses, 1977, p.309.
