Primary school, with master's house attached, originally built by the Guildhall Feoffment Trust as a Poor Boys' School. 1843, by HE Kendall, architect. Red brick with black brick headers, white brick, knapped flint dressings, slate roof. EXTERIOR: one storey school, one-and-a-half storey house. In Tudor Gothic style. The main school room has a tripartite gabled front with 4-light traceried windows: mullion and transom divisions, 4-centred arched heads to lights, intersected tracery heads. Brick drip-mould. 2 outer single casements with 4-centred arched heads. Black headers in diamonds below, 4 knapped flint buttresses rising through the parapet of the gable as finials. Blank shields under drip mould in apex. Roof with boarded rectangular cupola. Battlemented single-storey wing to left, battlemented screen wall with 4-centred arched gate, buttresses and parapet with shield to right. A range fronting on College Street, contemporary and in the same style but initially detached, is now linked by C20 extensions to the main block. The master's house, attached at the right, has a ground storey rectangular bow with 3-light arch-headed casement; one single-light 1st floor casement. Clasping angle buttresses, parapet gable. Brick and flint dwarf wall with single and double pedestrian wicket gates with gate piers attached. INTERIOR of the school hall has a 5-bay open timber roof in Jacobean style with arch-braced hammer-beam trusses and cusped spandrels to the collar braces. Square moulded hanging finials; 3 rows of through purlins. One classroom has a timber arch-braced collar truss.
